Speed Boat Experiment

The Whys

Going back to our Transportation worksheet, we were exploring in our class how things move and how WE can make things move by using just two ingredients.

What you will need

  •  One small bottle of water
  • Hot glue gun (preferably, but normal white glue may work too)
  • Straw
  • 1 Tbsp Soda and 1/2 cup Vinegar
  • Tissue
  • A big transparent box or a big baking tray can work too
  • Water
  • Funnel
  • A pin or something sharp

The Method

  • Make a small hole (you can use a pin and just start twisting it around to the make the hole toward the bottom of the bottle, make sure that the straw can easily go through without bending it
  • Take your hot glue gun or glue and use it around the hole to make sure no water can get in. Let it cool down and dry.
  • Pour or let your child pour vinegar inside the bottle (you may want to use a funnel here)
  • In a tissue pour your soda
  • Tilt your bottle so that the vinegar stays down and the tissue with the soda can be put inside the top of the bottle, close it, and let the tissue go down to the vinegar
  • Place the bottle inside the water and watch what happens
